Sorry if this is a subject that has already been dealt with, but has something happened to the way links are made to specific pages in a book?

When I use the link, say,
https://archive.org/stream/chrysostom_matthew_homilies_field_vol_1#page/n112/mode/1up

instead of going to the desired page (as it has done for as long as I can remember!) there now appears to be an "override" which goes to the opening page of the document instead. Is this something temporary, or is it permanent?

So to
https://archive.org/stream/chrysostom_matthew_homilies_field_vol_1#page/n0/mode/1up

If it is permanent, is there any kind of workaround? From my perspective it is really important to be able to link to a specific page in a book rather than having an override default which goes to the opening page.

(I hope this is not a permanent new feature!!)

Andrew

Linking to pages in 1up mode has started going wrong again. Not by going to the opening page of the book as was the case when this bug was first reported, but by going to a location roughly one or two or three or more pages past the correct location. e.g. This page of mine used to work, with the links taking you to the start of the correct section of the book: http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/leabhraichean/Forbes1905/, but as can be seen it is no longer working properly. I have created a test version of the page with all the 1up links replaced by 2up, and this does work: http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/gaidhlig/leabhraichean/Forbes1905/2up.html. The loss of 1up mode would be an inconvenience in an application like this, and would break lots of links people have placed over the years on bulletin boards, wikipedia references and so on. But for other applications it would be more than an inconvenience. I have indexed by first (or last) word all the pages of a score of dictionaries on the Internet Archive, and this made it possible (via multidict.net) to link easily to the correct page to find a word - until 1up mode suddenly stopped working. Switching to 2up mode would be a big big loss. Not only would it be less precise, forcing the user to do twice as much searching and zooming, but it would be a lot harder to read entries which span two pages.

As far as I can tell, the links accessible through the first URL you have quoted do work properly for me (but I couldn't access your 2nd URL)

I am invested in these type of problems, as I contribute to a wiki where there are links to particular pages of books, so I know it is important that these links work.

Cheers
Maureen

So glad you reported this! It has been driving me nuts. Glad to know: (a) I'm not going mad; (b) I'm not alone; (c) this is, in fact, a "bug" *not* a "feature"; and (d) a fix is on the way.

Phews!

David.

It is interesting to hear that this is a significant concern for others as well. No sign of anything being rectified as yet. This issue does seriously affect the operation of the website of Early Christian texts which I oversee. On many pages the option of linking to "2up" rather than "1up" is simply not a workable option. Jeff, is there any news of when this might be fixed?

Yes, links to ""1up" pages seem to work fine again now. Your attention to this is appreciated. It is important, please, that it remains possible to make links to individual pages in this way. Thanks. Andrew

the first link definitely indicates a bug. i'll escalate that. if you were to specify 2up it works correctly:
https://archive.org/stream/chrysostom_matthew_homilies_field_vol_1#page/n112/mode/2up

the second link is to n0 which is the first page.

Thanks Jeff.
I'm glad to hear that this is a bug rather than a permanent change.
Let's hope it can be fixed soon.
Thanks - Andrew

I am likewise very very glad to hear that this is a bug rather than a permanent change. I actually reported it last night as a bug in the bookreader, https://bugs.launchpad.net/bookreader/+bug/1650687, although I wasn’t sure whether it was to do with the bookreader, or something specific to archive.org:

I checked again (after Christmas break) and things seem to be fine now. The problem has gone away.
